NVIDIA DLSS 5 Goes Live Tonight in NBA 2K27, Bringing 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and GeForce NOW

NVIDIA's long-debated DLSS 5 neural rendering technology officially launches tonight at 9:00 PM Pacific Time inside NBA 2K27, debuting 3D-Guided Neural Rendering on every GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU and on GeForce NOW Ultimate. The technology is exclusive to the current generation at launch, with Star Wars Zero Company, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and The Blood of Dawnwalker expected to follow.

NVIDIA DLSS 5 Goes Live Tonight in NBA 2K27, Bringing 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and GeForce NOW

After months of leaks, technical demos and a public back-and-forth between critics and CEO Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's DLSS 5 neural rendering technology is officially going live today, September 3, 2026, at 9:00 PM Pacific Time inside Visual Concepts and 2K's NBA 2K27. The rollout marks the first time a shipping game ships with NVIDIA's 3D-Guided Neural Rendering pipeline on every GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPU, as well as on GeForce NOW's Ultimate tier.

DLSS 5 represents the most ambitious step yet in the DLSS roadmap, moving beyond upscaling and frame generation toward full scene reconstruction. The 3D-Guided Neural Rendering approach trains a generative model on real-world lighting behaviour, allowing the GPU's tensor cores to infer how light scatters through complex materials such as human skin or individual hair strands in real time. NVIDIA's pitch is that the technique gets close to Hollywood-style realism without the brute-force cost of rendering every photorealistic detail natively, with the trade-off being heavier per-frame compute that leans on Multi Frame Generation to keep frame rates in the 60+ range.

The first wave of support is exclusive to NVIDIA's current generation. NVIDIA confirmed at Gamescom that DLSS 5 will not be available on RTX 30 series or older cards at launch, and the company's public statements have not committed to a wider rollout, instead repeating vague "working to eventually" language that has kept the door open for RTX 40 series support without setting a timeline. GeForce NOW Ultimate subscribers on RTX 5080-class hardware can stream DLSS 5 sessions, making the cloud the only realistic path for non-RTX 50 owners.

A new GeForce Game Ready Driver ships alongside the toggle inside NBA 2K27, and Visual Concepts has been working with NVIDIA to integrate the artistic controls that let developers fine-tune DLSS 5 per pixel. Senior producer Peter Kavic, whose team integrated the tech, told NVIDIA that the per-pixel uplift mask was critical for protecting player likeness: "We can set the overall tone and style to match our existing art direction and then really get precise where it matters most, using a per pixel uplift control mask to fine tune detail on characters. Given that we want to respect their likeness with the utmost care."

NBA 2K27 itself is a soft launch vehicle rather than a global simultaneous release, with Deluxe and Ultra Edition buyers having already had access to the base game. The DLSS 5 toggle activates at 9:00 PM PT tonight, which lines up with midnight ET and 04:00 UTC on September 4, and is expected to remain the only shipping DLSS 5 game in the near term, with NVIDIA pointing to a confirmed follow-up slate that includes Star Wars Zero Company, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and The Blood of Dawnwalker, all expected to add support in the months after launch.
