Until North Ends Enters Steam Early Access Today After Eight Years of Solo Development

Until North Ends, the debut open-world survival crafting title from solo developer Unknown Hex, is officially live on Steam Early Access today, August 31, 2026. The game ships with online co-op, procedural Nordic landscapes, and the first slice of a content roadmap that the studio plans to expand over roughly two years before a full release.

Until North Ends draws direct inspiration from classic top-down action adventures, presenting its survival crafting through a stylized low-poly lens and an overhead camera. Players can play alone or with friends, sail across open water to discover new islands, dive into caves and dungeons, and decide whether they want to settle down on a guarded safe haven or live as wandering nomads. Combat supports melee, ranged bows, and a chain lightning-style power, while base building, farming, and a full resource-refining system (smelting, alchemy, leather curing) sit alongside a character creator that lets players customize hair, tattoos, and other visual options.

The Steam Early Access store page lists farming, cooking, brewing, smelting and resource refining, encounters with multiple enemy types, procedurally generated worlds, melee and ranged combat, character progression, base building, crafting, and co-op as the launch feature set. The developer has confirmed that the price will not change at full release, and that the Early Access window is expected to last about two years while new biomes, items, and character customization options are added in response to community feedback.

Unknown Hex spent roughly eight years developing the project on his own. The studio's official positioning leans into atmosphere and emotion over feature completeness, and the Early Access plan reflects that: a stated goal of adding more biomes, items, and customization, with feedback from the Steam community and the project's Discord shaping direction.
