Riot Games Is Ending Active Development on 2XKO in December 2026

Riot Games has confirmed that active development on its League of Legends fighting game 2XKO will wrap up at the end of 2026. Servers will remain online after development ends, offline play is unaffected, and Riot is unlocking every champion and refunding every in-game purchase made on or before August 20.

The decision was laid out today in an official Riot Games news post. The 2XKO team said it had been monitoring player retention, new-player flow and engagement through 2026 and saw "no meaningful, sustained change in 2XKO's trajectory; only a fraction of what it would take to trend toward sustainability." In the studio's own framing, "2XKO costs us substantially more to operate than it brings in, and engagement has stayed relatively flat despite our larger updates."

What's changing now:

  • Two new champions, Lux and Samira, are still scheduled to arrive in the coming months.
  • The final content patch is targeted for October, with a final bug-fix patch in December.
  • All champions will be unlocked in patch 1.3.1 in September, and most cosmetics will be bundled for 39.99 USD or made available for Credits.
  • KO Points purchases will be disabled, and any money spent on 2XKO on or before August 20 will be refunded.
  • Online servers will continue running beyond 2026, with Riot promising "advanced notice if any of that changes."

The studio framed the move as a way to do right by the players who backed the game while avoiding another year of "an irresponsible choice for players and the dev team" trying to find a path forward. Riot said it looked at reducing team size, adjusting patch schedules and changing the business model before settling on finishing the work-in-progress content and sunsetting active development.

2XKO launched in January 2025 as a free-to-play tag fighter set in the League of Legends universe. The title never broke out at the level Riot was hoping for, and earlier this year the studio laid off around 80 developers working on the game, citing the same sustainability concerns.

Independent reporting from PC Gamer, IGN and Rock Paper Shotgun corroborated the announcement within minutes of Riot's post, all timestamped August 20, 2026. The team also confirmed the update through its official @Play2XKO account on X.

Riot has not said whether 2XKO's online services will run indefinitely, but for now the game is staying online and Rioters who built it are getting a chance to ship the content they were already working on.
