PlayStation Players Launch Weeklong Blackout Protest Against Sony's Physical Disc Discontinuation

PlayStation owners are kicking off a coordinated weeklong blackout on August 23 in protest of Sony's quiet phase-out of physical disc support, with Sony responding by emailing users a reminder that digital games bought on the PlayStation Store are "licensed to you, not sold."

The protest, organized under the "#PlayStationBlackout" or "#PS5Blackout" banner, asks players to stay offline and avoid playing any PlayStation titles from August 23 through August 30. Organisers argue that Sony is using last year's PS5 disc-drive removal and the recent addition of warning labels on PS5 boxes as a backdoor route to an all-digital future, even as the console maker publicly maintains that physical games remain a supported product category.

The protest gained momentum on August 22 after Sony sent account-wide emails to PlayStation Network users reminding them that purchases made on the PlayStation Store are licences, not sales of the software itself. Sony's email cited the standard End User License Agreement terms that have governed PlayStation Store purchases since the service launched, but the timing — days before the planned blackout — drew immediate criticism from players who pointed out that physical discs had no such restrictions and could be resold or traded.

"Sony has chosen to remind consumers of the licence-only nature of digital purchases right before a community-led protest against exactly that kind of ownership erosion," the organisers wrote in a statement circulated on social media. "Whether intentional or not, the timing is a slap in the face to every player who values owning the games they pay for."

Reports from Insider Gaming, Kotaku, TwistedVoxel and Tech4Gamers all confirm the protest is set to begin on August 23, with participants asked to refrain from logging in to any PlayStation network service for the full week. Several large PlayStation-focused Discord servers have already pinned the blackout dates, and a handful of content creators have said they will publicly pause their PS5 coverage in solidarity.

Sony has responded with a short official statement that defends its current approach: "We continue to support physical disc games on PlayStation 5 and have no plans to change that." The statement, however, does not address the broader concerns around digital licensing, the removal of the disc drive from the standard PS5 hardware revision, or the new "physical disc support may end" warning stickers that began appearing on PS5 retail packaging earlier this summer.

The protest sits alongside a parallel Stop Killing Games-backed lawsuit filed in the Netherlands against Sony's PlayStation Store, which accuses the company of running a de facto monopoly on the sale of digital PlayStation games. Consumer advocates in that case argue that Sony's control over the only legal way to purchase digital PlayStation titles gives the platform holder too much power to revoke access, raise prices, or sunset servers without meaningful recourse for buyers.

For now, organisers say the goal of the blackout is awareness rather than a demand for a specific policy reversal. They are asking players to share their participation using the official hashtag and to contact Sony's player support channels with a simple message: physical games must remain a first-class option on PlayStation hardware.

The PlayStation Blackout runs from August 23 through August 30, 2026.
