Onimusha: Way of the Sword Launches Today on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC After 20-Year Hiatus

Capcom's first new mainline Onimusha game in two decades is officially on sale today. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched worldwide on September 4, 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam, after the Japanese publisher moved the release forward from its previously announced September 25 date.

The Swordplay Action title drops players into a supernatural, Edo-period Kyoto twisted by Malice, where protagonist Miyamoto Musashi wields both steel and the power of the Oni Gauntlet against the Genma menace. Combat centres on close-range timing: parry, deflect, Issen counters and soul absorption all feed into a system Capcom designed to keep melee encounters at the centre of the experience. The game runs on Capcom's RE Engine and supports 14 languages at launch.

Capcom's official site confirms the September 4, 2026 launch and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam as the release platforms, with the Switch 2 version shipping alongside them. The studio's announcement in July explained that the date was pulled forward "in order to bring this game to you sooner," shaving roughly three weeks off the original schedule. Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks Capcom's return to the franchise 20 years after Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams and follows a run of RE Engine remakes that re-established the publisher's classical catalogue.
