Onimusha: Way of the Sword Gets New Demo Boss and Oni Awakening Trailer at Gamescom 2026
Capcom has used Gamescom 2026 to drop Trailer 6 for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, expand the playable demo with a new boss named Daidara, and detail how the studio rebuilt the franchise for newcomers ahead of its September 4 PS5 launch.

Capcom and Sony have used Gamescom 2026 to deliver the most substantial Onimusha: Way of the Sword update since the game was first unveiled. A dedicated PlayStation Blog post by editor Sachie Kobari confirms a new trailer, a substantial demo update with a brand-new boss fight, and a long interview with producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei ahead of the action game's September 4, 2026 launch as a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive.
The new footage, billed as Trailer 6 by Capcom, showcases "Oni Awakening," a state in which protagonist Miyamoto Musashi releases his inner Oni strength to overpower his enemies. The trailer also puts Musashi face to face with a series of previously unseen Genma opponents and was debuted live on stage at Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase.
The playable demo currently available on the PlayStation Store has been updated alongside the announcement. The build now lets players test their steel against "Daidara," a massive new boss added to the playable areas. Players who carry over save data from the updated demo into the full game will also unlock the "Kubi Akari" Charm and receive a permanent stat boost for Musashi at launch.
In the accompanying PlayStation Blog interview, director Satoru Nihei and producer Akihito Kadowaki stress that the team rebuilt the universe "from the ground up so that first-time players can jump right in." There are no direct storyline connections to earlier Onimusha games, Nihei said, with the new entry reframing the relationship between the Oni and the Genma: the Oni now guard gateways from which Genma attempt to spill over from the depths of hell into the human realm.
The pair also confirmed several PS5-specific features. Haptic feedback has been tuned from audio waveforms so that cutscene vibrations sync to what is happening on screen, with bespoke haptic responses for absorbing souls and the impact of massive Genma attacks. Adaptive triggers are used both for drawing Musashi's bowstring and for sealing the "Rift" portals that spawn Genma. Impulse Response audio was recorded inside real Japanese temples and historic residences to recreate the acoustics of early Edo-period Kyoto for 3D audio, including height channels for flying Genma and collapsing structures.
On the combat side, Nihei pointed to "Dynamic Dismemberment" as the foundation of the series' signature visceral slicing feel, with enemies cleanly sliced along the exact trajectory of the player's blade. Capcom has also added Break Issen, a more accessible replacement for the Issen counter that historically required frame-perfect timing; in Way of the Sword, players can trigger the attack by fully depleting an enemy's Stamina Gauge. The DualSense controller's built-in speaker is used for soul-absorption and Oni Gauntlet audio cues.
The producer and director also confirmed that Musashi's face is modelled on legendary Japanese film actor Toshiro Mifune, with Mifune Productions reviewing facial expressions and cutscenes at multiple stages. Kadowaki said the team received particularly strong feedback from the Mifune estate when the studio was told the results looked "so spot-on, we feel like we don't even need to review it anymore."
For the world itself, the team worked closely with the City of Kyoto. Nihei highlighted that the number of wooden pillars supporting the stage at Kiyomizu-dera Temple matches the exact count of the real structure, while the famous Twin Dragons ceiling painting at Kennin-ji Temple was kept in the game even though it did not historically exist during the Edo period, because the team wanted players to feel the same awe that visitors do today.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 4, 2026 for PlayStation 5. The updated demo is available now on the PlayStation Store, with the full interview and Trailer 6 hosted on the official PlayStation Blog.
