Modern Warfare 4 Beta Loses Nearly Half Its Steam CCU in 24 Hours as Mixed Reviews Pile Up
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's open beta opened to 115,145 concurrent players on Steam before dropping to roughly 51,000 a day later, with user reviews now sitting at "Mixed" and 45% negative.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's early access beta started strong on Steam before falling off a cliff. According to SteamDB charts cited by TheGamer, the Modern Warfare 4 beta peaked at 115,145 concurrent players on Steam when the early access window opened on Friday, August 21. By Saturday afternoon the 24-hour figure had slid to 51,582 players, with a 24-hour peak of just over 60,000, and TheGamer's live check put the live CCU closer to 46,000 as the beta moved into its second weekend. The drop is the clearest signal yet that the boots-on-the-ground reboot Infinity Ward has been pitching is not landing with PC players, and it lands the same day the Modern Warfare 4 beta review aggregate on Steam tipped into "Mixed" territory, with 45% of user reviews now negative.
Players are not hiding what they dislike. Negative Steam reviews pulled out by TheGamer and Kotaku call out loud footsteps that give stealth perks an unfair edge, a time-to-kill that feels too fast, auto-aim and aim-assist behavior they describe as off, a roster of maps they consider unimpressive, and spawn points that consistently drop players into unwinnable fights. One Steam reviewer summarized the experience as "like scrolling through TikTok." The complaints are loud enough that Infinity Ward has already responded through its beta channels. CharlieIntel, the long-running Call of Duty community outlet, posted on X on August 23 that Infinity Ward is "seeing feedback on TTK and working to make adjustments to it," alongside a wider push to reduce attachment penalties and rework spawn placement ahead of the next beta weekend.
PC Gamer's coverage of the same first beta patch notes that Infinity Ward has already pushed a follow-up that adds a new map called Cachette and a new mode called Inflation, while dialing back footstep audio and gun lethality, and Kotaku's recap points to the same set of adjustments after Infinity Ward's community managers confirmed the team is reading feedback across its official Discord and subreddit. The full open beta, which is the round that drops the early-access requirement, is scheduled to begin next week, ahead of Modern Warfare 4's October 23 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
The Steam slide matters because it is the only accurate player counter Modern Warfare 4 has before launch. Activision has not shared platform-specific engagement figures, and console-side numbers are hidden behind the platform holders' own privacy walls. Independent live data pulled from Steam's public API while this article was being filed still shows the Modern Warfare 4 beta hovering in the mid-40,000s more than 48 hours after the early access window opened, well below the 115k opening peak and showing no sign of a rebound. Infinity Ward now has one beta weekend to convince the rest of the player base to come back before the open beta goes live next week and Modern Warfare 4 arrives on shelves in October.
Activision's official Call of Duty channels are publishing patch notes and the Infinity Ward team is openly engaging with player feedback, so a turnaround before launch is still possible. The question is whether Modern Warfare 4 can rebuild enough momentum to avoid the kind of post-launch slide that has defined Call of Duty's last few releases.
