Infinity Ward Confirms First MW4 Beta Hotfix Targets Footstep Audio, Map Voting, Weapon Balance and Bugs

Infinity Ward has used its official channels to confirm the first Modern Warfare 4 beta patch is already in the oven, listing footstep audio tuning, the return of map voting, weapon balance adjustments and bug fixes as the immediate priorities after a rocky Day 1 for the Early Access Multiplayer and Campaign beta.

Infinity Ward Confirms First MW4 Beta Hotfix Targets Footstep Audio, Map Voting, Weapon Balance and Bugs

Infinity Ward has confirmed the first official hotfix for the Modern Warfare 4 beta is on the way, after a Day 1 that saw the Early Access Multiplayer and Campaign build attract unusually heavy criticism across social media, Twitch and Steam.

Taking to its official X account shortly after the Early Access beta went live, the Call of Duty studio listed the issues it is working on first. The first post-launch update, the developer said, is already being cooked for the following day and will deliver footstep audio tuning, the return of map voting, weapon balance adjustments and a round of bug fixes, alongside new content that Infinity Ward promised to reveal soon.

Footstep audio has emerged as the early headline complaint. Players have repeatedly called out the loud, sharply directional footstep mix for making the Ninja perk feel essential in nearly every gunfight, with anyone not running it at an immediate disadvantage. According to the developer post, the audio mix is now being tuned to bring stealth footsteps back to a more reasonable balance, a change that should also reduce how much the perk dictates loadout choices in the build's current form.

Map voting is another long-standing Call of Duty staple that has been missing from the Modern Warfare 4 beta. Its return in the first update is a direct response to community feedback and should give players a more direct say in which of the six Core 6v6 maps they rotate through after each match, alongside the six maps and two 24v24 Ground War maps detailed in the PlayStation Blog launch coverage. The first update will also ship alongside weapon balance adjustments, a category that Infinity Ward has not detailed but that, in practice, is almost certain to touch the Han 86 Assault Rifle, the Apex Attachments system and the broader Gunsmith meta that Infinity Ward walked through on Xbox Wire.

Bug fixes complete the priority list. Across the first 24 hours, Early Access testers reported a mix of stability issues, intermittent audio dropouts and the usual shader-compilation complaints on PC, problems that are typical of a Call of Duty beta at this stage of production but that Infinity Ward has now publicly committed to addressing in its first patch.

Infinity Ward's announcement is a notable shift in tone from the studio, which has historically waited until after a beta weekend wrapped before opening up about what it would change. Going public with a specific patch plan on Day 1 of the Early Access window is a direct response to the volume of feedback, and a sign that the studio is treating the feedback loop on Modern Warfare 4 as a real-time process rather than a postmortem.

The Early Access beta runs through August 25 at 10:00 am PT, with an Open Beta following from August 28 through September 1, ahead of Modern Warfare 4's full launch on October 23, 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The first beta hotfix is expected to land during that initial weekend.
