Heroes of the Storm Xal'atath PTR Goes Live Today, Six Years After the Last New Hero

Blizzard has opened the Heroes of the Storm public test realm to Xal'atath today, September 14, 2026, marking the first new playable character to enter the MOBA in more than half a decade. The Void-themed Ranged Assassin, the primary antagonist of World of Warcraft: Midnight, will move from PTR to live servers on Monday, September 28.

Xal'atath was revealed at the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on September 12 as the first new Hero since Hogger was added in 2020. According to Blizzard's official BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony recap, the character is "joining Heroes of the Storm as its newest Hero" and the studio used the reveal to thank players who had kept the game alive through its long content drought. Blizzard President Johanna Faries told the crowd that the studio is open to more heroes depending on how the PTR and launch land.

Heroes of the Storm's official news channel announced the PTR schedule on the Heroes of the Storm news site, confirming that the test realm opens today and that the character ships on the standard live patch on September 28. The same announcement ties Xal'atath's arrival to World of Warcraft: Midnight, which launched earlier in 2026 and gave Heroes of the Storm a Crimson War Bear mount as a cross-promotion.

Heroes of the Storm ended official content support in 2022, with Blizzard telling players at the time that future updates would focus on "client sustainability and bug fixing." Xal'Atath's PTR is the first real test of whether the MOBA can return to a release cadence. A Blizzard franchise leader told media that the studio will "see how this does," adding that the Xal'atath launch is the "first foray into something really big" and that "if the community responds well, it could lead to more things." Faries went further on stage, thanking the HotS player base directly and teasing that "we might even have another new hero on the way in the future."

Players can try Xal'atath on the Heroes of the Storm PTR starting today, with the full server rollout scheduled for September 28, 2026. Blizzard has not yet announced pricing or bundle details beyond what was shown on the BlizzCon stage.
