Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Hands-On Out of Gamescom Calls It Brutal and 'Quintessentially Gears'
Xbox Wire has published the first official Gears of War: E-Day campaign preview from Gamescom 2026, sending editor Danielle Partis into a tense Kalona mission where Marcus, Dom and two new squadmates face smarter Locust drones in a modernised, cover-slamming return to form for The Coalition.

The Coalition's first published hands-on with the Gears of War: E-Day campaign has landed on Xbox Wire, and the studio is framing the build shown behind closed doors at Gamescom 2026 as a deliberate return to the 2006 original's identity rather than a reinvention.
Xbox Wire editor Danielle Partis describes the preview as "brutal, brilliant, and quintessentially Gears", running through the opening of Act 2 from inside the walls of Kalona — a brand-new city built specifically for the prequel. The setup puts players in the boots of a younger, less battle-worn Marcus Fenix alongside Dom, plus two brand-new squadmates in Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter, all freshly briefed by a hard-pressed COG command staff that includes Colonel Trench. The narrative choices land: Marcus still defers to the chain of command, Dom lists his wife Maria as next of kin, and Reyes and Carter have no listed family, establishing a quiet bond between the two newcomers before a shot is fired.
On the controller, the preview emphasises the same sense of weight The Coalition has spent years refining. Cover-to-cover dashes, the slam into concrete, the Lancer stutter of bullets into a Drone's face, and the return of Perfect Reload with its timed-bumper risk all sit at the centre of the demo. Marcus feels noticeably more fluid in traversal than he did in the original trilogy, and the adaptive camera now pulls in tight on solo encounters or zooms out for crowd fights in a way the preview frames as a small but meaningful step up in cinematic punch. New finishers — including an Aard-sign finisher — round out the combat kit.
The most interesting design takeaway is how aggressive the Locust are this time. Drones in the E-Day demo dive into cover, retreat tactically, flank when pressured, and in one encounter throw smoke to blind Marcus before rushing in for a melee hit. That kind of squad AI has been a long-standing request from the Gears community, and The Coalition appears to have leaned into it as a way to make the prequel feel mechanically modern without abandoning the cover-and-roll backbone the series is known for. The preview also plants a possible Hammer of Dawn tease in Trench's opening briefing, hinting at the orbital superweapon's role in the larger E-Day narrative.
The original Xbox Wire preview stops short of confirming a release date and contains no multiplayer content — the campaign was the sole focus of the hands-on sessions held at Gamescom. E-Day's place in the broader showcase, including its Opening Night Live trailer slot, had already been confirmed by Geoff Keighley ahead of the show.
The full hands-on is available on Xbox Wire, alongside The Coalition's wider Gamescom 2026 coverage and the studio's broader E-Day updates on the official Gears of War site.
