Game Freak Announces Ame nochi Hare Onna, a Real-World Weather-Powered Magical Girl Mobile Game for Winter 2026

Game Freak has officially pulled the curtain on its next project: Ame nochi Hare Onna, a free-to-play mobile game set in modern-day Japan where magical girls called "Hare Onna" turn real-world weather forecasts into magical power. The studio confirmed the title today, September 14, alongside a teaser PV on its official channels, with a planned winter 2026 release on iOS and Android in Japan.

The game is being directed and produced by Shigeru Ohmori, the longtime Game Freak director who has led the mainline Pokémon series since Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in 2014 and most recently served as concept and senior director on Pokopoko Pokémon. Development is being co-led with Chronogate, and Game Freak has partnered with Weathernews, one of Japan's best-known weather services, to pipe live forecast data into the experience. As Ohmori explained in comments shared with Famitsu, the basic concept was sparked by a very domestic moment: "If you're going to check the weather forecast every day to do laundry, why not make a game that uses the weather forecast?"

Players step into the shoes of a group of Hare Onna — magical girls whose powers tap into weather forecasts to brighten the moods of people around them. They work alongside cloud-like companions called Kumorin. The newly revealed main character, Himawari Haruto, represents the Kanto region and was designed by Aki Minamino, best known for her character work on the Gakuen Idolmaster series. Her Kumorin partner, Arai Pon, comes from an in-house Game Freak designer.

Gameplay centers on "laundry" as a unifying metaphor: players hang laundry and the outcomes are shaped by what the local sky is actually doing, mirroring how real weather changes everyday tasks. Game Freak officially describes the title as a "laundry game," though the studio is keeping deeper systems under wraps for now. Additional details, including the game's voice cast, will be revealed during the "Harejobu Meeting" official livestream later today, September 14, at 7:00 PM JST, broadcast from the Weathernews studio and hosted by broadcaster Airi Yamagishi. Game Freak has also confirmed the project will appear at Tokyo Game Show 2026.

For now, the studio has only committed to a Japan-first launch, with overseas expansion not yet confirmed. The official Ame nochi Hare Onna iOS page is already live, and a dedicated Japanese-only App Store listing has been published ahead of the broadcast.

The title lands at an interesting moment for Game Freak, which has spent most of the public conversation tied to its Pokémon work. Earlier this year the studio confirmed Pokémon Winds and Waves, the tenth-generation mainline entry, for a 2027 global launch, and shipped Beast of Reincarnation in August. Ame nochi Hare Onna is the studio's clearest signal yet that it is willing to keep experimenting with new mobile properties alongside its flagship work.
