Dave Bautista Confirmed as the New Kratos in Amazon’s God of War Series After Ryan Hurst’s Injury Exit

Amazon’s live-action God of War series has a new lead. Variety is reporting that Dave Bautista has officially closed his deal to replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos in the Prime Video adaptation, after the original actor was forced to step down because of a torn bicep that required surgery and ruled him out of production. Neither Amazon Studios nor PlayStation Productions has yet confirmed the casting on their own channels.

According to Variety, Bautista’s deal is closed and he is set to step into the role as filming continues in Vancouver. The series, which began shooting back in February, will have to redo all of Kratos’ scenes with the former WWE star as the lead. God of War showrunner Ronald D. Moore is overseeing the adaptation, which is based on the 2018 PlayStation 4 soft reboot and its follow-up Ragnarök, following Kratos and his young son Atreus as they travel through Midgard.

The recast itself was first reported by Variety in late July, when it described Bautista as being in talks. At the time the story was framed as preliminary because Ryan Hurst had only just exited the production. With Variety now describing the deal as closed, multiple outlets — including Game Informer, Kotaku, PC Gamer, CGMagazine, Wccftech and Deadline — have picked up the confirmation. People.com had reported the deal as closed earlier today before Variety ran its own version.

For Amazon, the cast change is a major production headache. Deadline previously noted that Hurst had “undergone a physical transformation” for the role, putting on roughly 40 pounds of muscle to embody the Spartan god of war. The few actors who can credibly deliver that kind of physical presence on short notice are exactly the kind of names being floated here, and Bautista — a six-time former WWE champion — is among the most prominent. Still, the production will have to factor in additional time and reshoots as a result.

The change also has knock-on effects for season two. PC Gamer reports that filming on the second season is expected to begin almost immediately after the first wraps, which means producers will also have to consider recasting Atreus and Thrud, the younger roles that may need older actors as the timeline moves forward between seasons.

For now, neither Amazon Prime Video nor Sony’s PlayStation Productions has issued an official press release or social media statement confirming the casting. As is standard with entertainment reporting of this kind, Variety’s story is the originating source, and the broader coverage has so far stuck to its wording. The studios are likely to wait until a more formal promotional moment — possibly tied to a first trailer or a launch-window announcement — before speaking on the record.
