Capcom: Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sells Over 1 Million Units on Launch Day, Series Crosses 10 Million Lifetime

Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword moved more than one million units worldwide on its first day on shelves, with the publisher announcing the milestone on September 7, 2026 through its official investor relations channels. The strong launch day pushed cumulative lifetime sales of the Onimusha series past 10 million units, a round figure the franchise had been approaching for several months ahead of release.

The title is the first new entry in the Onimusha series in more than 20 years, following the 2006 release of Dawn of Dreams. It is a swordplay action game starring Miyamoto Musashi, set in an Edo-era Kyoto twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice, and it launched on September 4, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

In its September 7 release, Capcom credited the launch-day performance to a sustained pre-release marketing push that included multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions at events such as Gamescom 2026, where Onimusha: Way of the Sword picked up the Best Gameplay and Best Sony PlayStation Game awards. The strategy, the publisher said, was designed to expand awareness among a broad range of users, and the result was a clean one-million-unit opening.

The milestone also lifted the entire series. Cumulative Onimusha sales had sat above 9.1 million as of March 31, 2026 and above 9.2 million as of June 30, 2026 according to Capcom's earlier disclosures. With Way of the Sword's first-day figures added, the franchise is now confirmed to have cleared the 10 million mark.

The announcement fits Capcom's stated content strategy for 2026. The publisher has framed the year around regularly releasing major new titles while also reactivating dormant IPs, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword is positioned as a flagship example of that push. Earlier disclosures this year also confirmed Pragmata has sold over 2.5 million copies and Resident Evil Requiem had surpassed 8 million units, while Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is lined up later in the year.

Reviews and player reception matched the sales performance. Way of the Sword currently sits at an 85 Metascore with an 87 percent positive rating on Steam, making it one of the highest-rated Capcom releases of the year and a notably strong return for a series that had been dormant since the PlayStation 2 era.

Capcom's official statement, including the product details for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, is published on the Capcom IR site. Players can pick up the game on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and other storefronts.
