Blizzard Officially Announces Diablo V for Spring 2029, Set in a Sanctuary That Has Already Fallen

Blizzard confirmed Diablo V at the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony with a Spring 2029 release window, framing the sequel as the franchise's first game set in a world where Diablo has won and Sanctuary's heroes are gone. The 30-year-old franchise also picked up a Netflix animated series, an Amazon class pack for Diablo IV, and a Switch 2 port.

Blizzard Officially Announces Diablo V for Spring 2029, Set in a Sanctuary That Has Already Fallen

Blizzard Entertainment used the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony in Anaheim to officially confirm Diablo V, the next mainline entry in the 30-year-old Diablo franchise, with a Spring 2029 release window. In a break from past entries, the game is described as the first Diablo built around a Sanctuary that Diablo has already won, with the franchise's traditional heroes defeated.

The opening cinematic shows Sanctuary after the fall: demons and humans actively hunting angels, no towns, and no safe places. "There are no towns, no safe places waiting to protect you," game director Joe Shely said on stage. Blizzard's Tiffany Wat framed the sequel's central question around survival in a world where the demons no longer need to hide. "That changes everything. How you survive, what powers you're willing to claim, and what you're willing to sacrifice to survive. At the heart of Diablo V lies a simple question: what must you become when the world has already fallen?" Blizzard set up an early look at the world, classes and creative vision behind the sequel for the Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel on September 12 at 1:45 p.m. PT, and opened signups for future updates at Diablo5.Blizzard.com.

The Diablo V reveal was the centerpiece of a 30th-anniversary blitz that touched every active Blizzard franchise. Alongside the new sequel, Blizzard confirmed that a Diablo animated series is in development with Netflix, marking the studio's first formal move into Diablo on streaming. Blizzard President Johanna Faries told the audience the partnership is "only the beginning" and hinted that Overwatch and Warcraft adaptations will follow in some form, though no other Netflix projects were confirmed.

The current game, Diablo IV, also got a clear forward roadmap. The Amazon class pack arrives in the first half of 2027 with four archetypes — Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander — and reintroduces both the bow and javelin as an entirely new weapon type for the game. To mark the 30th anniversary, Diablo IV's Season of Hell's Legacy launches September 15 and brings back the Prime Evils, Deckard Cain, anniversary rewards and gear inspired by every era of the franchise, which Blizzard says has now passed 130 million players worldwide across all mainline entries. The same day, Diablo IV releases on Nintendo Switch 2 as the Age of Hatred collection, bundling the base game with both expansions.

Diablo Immortal's previously announced Spawn crossover is also tied to the BlizzCon weekend, with creator Todd McFarlane headlining the dedicated Diablo Immortal panel. Blizzard's full BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremonies recap, including the Diablo V cinematic reveal, is available on the official Blizzard newsroom, and the studio's full everything-announced list — including the Diablo V logo, the Switch 2 art and the Amazon key art — is hosted on Blizzard's press center for editorial use.

The Spring 2029 window leaves Diablo IV roughly three more years as the active mainline title. No platforms, pricing or further release date for Diablo V have been announced.
