ARK: Survival Evolved Official Switch Servers Shut Down August 31 as Studio Wildcard Pulls the Plug

Studio Wildcard has confirmed that the official multiplayer servers for both ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition on Nintendo Switch went offline today. The closure ends nearly eight years of official online play on the console, though single-player and unofficial servers remain fully playable.

ARK: Survival Evolved Official Switch Servers Shut Down August 31 as Studio Wildcard Pulls the Plug

Studio Wildcard has officially retired the official multiplayer servers for ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition on Nintendo Switch as of August 31, 2026, ending nearly eight years of first-party online play on the console.

The developer broke the news in Community Crunch 517 on the official ARK community forums and shared it again across its official @survivetheark social channels. In its statement, Studio Wildcard thanked the community directly: "It is with wistful hearts that today we are announcing the Official Servers for 'ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition' on Nintendo Switch will sunset on August 31st, 2026. Over a million players have explored these servers since the original ARK Switch release in 2018 and the launch of Grove Street Games' rebuilt Switch remaster in 2022. We want to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey."

The shutdown applies only to Wildcard-run official servers. Single-player mode and unofficial community servers will continue to function, and both Switch SKUs (the original 2018 ARK: Survival Evolved port and the 2022 Grove Street Games-built ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition) remain purchasable and downloadable from the Nintendo eShop.

Studio Wildcard did not publicly state a reason for the closure. The pattern mirrors what Wildcard has done elsewhere in the franchise: years ago it retired the original ARK's servers on PC, Xbox and PlayStation to push players toward the Unreal Engine 5 remake ARK: Survival Ascended, which runs on its own separate official network. The Switch could not run Ascended, and ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition effectively became the last official outlet for the pre-Ascended version of the game on Nintendo hardware.

For Switch owners, the practical upshot is straightforward. Anyone still hosting a tribe on an official server had roughly two weeks to migrate save data, transfer items, or finish final objectives; community advice across the Switch and ARK subreddits was to back up character data and tribe logs well before the August 31 deadline rather than wait until the final day.

The Switch version's history makes the closure a notable moment for the platform. The 2018 port was heavily criticized at launch for poor visuals and technical performance. Grove Street Games' 2022 ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition was framed as a ground-up overhaul designed to address those complaints, and for more than three years it gave Switch players a stable official place to tame, build and raid. With the official network retired, the game remains playable on Switch indefinitely, but only in single-player or via community-hosted unofficial servers that players can configure themselves.

No changes were announced for ARK: Survival Ascended, which continues to run its own separate official server network across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and (more recently) additional platforms without interruption. Studio Wildcard's same Community Crunch 517 also confirmed a focused Therizinosaurus TLC for Ascended that improves combat responsiveness, traversal and visual progression on one of the franchise's signature tames.
