Aniplex Steps In as Fate/EXTRA Record Publisher as Director Kazuya Niinou Exits TYPE-MOON Studio BB

Aniplex has taken over as publisher of the long-delayed Fate/EXTRA remake Fate/EXTRA Record, TYPE-MOON and its subsidiary TYPE-MOON Studio BB announced on August 31, 2026. The change comes with a new official website and X account now run by Aniplex, and a wider reshuffle inside the studio behind the project.

In a notice on the TYPE-MOON official site, the studio said it had finalized its choice of Aniplex following earlier discussions, and that some of Fate/EXTRA Record's development structure and the internal organization at TYPE-MOON Studio BB have also been adjusted. Staff credits listed on the upcoming new site will reflect those changes. The current Fate/EXTRA Record website and X account are scheduled to close around 5 p.m. Japan time on September 7, with future updates routed through Aniplex's channels on the newly established Fate/EXTRA Record official portal. Aniplex has said the next batch of news about the game is planned for September.

The publisher switch follows Bandai Namco Entertainment's March 2026 decision to step away from Fate/EXTRA Record, which had been delayed past its Spring 2026 target with existing preorders refunded. Aniplex already publishes other Fate series titles and worked with Sony on the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime adaptation.

On the same day, Fate/EXTRA Record director and TYPE-MOON Studio BB studio head Kazuya Niinou announced he has left the studio for personal reasons and has stepped away from the Fate/EXTRA Record development team. In posts on his personal X account, Niinou apologized to fans for not being able to fulfill his duties as director and asked the team to remove his name from the game's staff credits at launch, a request TYPE-MOON said it would honor. He added that he is taking a break from game development to focus on current health concerns, and that he will not comment further on Fate/EXTRA Record going forward, though he expressed confidence in the rest of the team.

Niinou produced the original 2010 Fate/EXTRA and served as director and planner on the remake. His other credits include the first Etrian Odyssey and the Dragon Quest Builders series. Notes, the parent of TYPE-MOON Studio BB, said updated staff listings for Fate/EXTRA Record will be revealed in September along with Aniplex's next update on the project.

Fate/EXTRA Record is in development for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The original Fate/EXTRA, a turn-based RPG set inside a virtual tournament called the Moon Cell, was released in Japan by Marvelous Entertainment and TYPE-MOON in 2010, with Aksys Games handling the North American release in November 2011.
